Cleft grafting is a reliable method for propagating chilli plants and combining desirable traits. First, select a healthy rootstock and cut the stem cleanly, then make a vertical split in the center. Prepare the scion by trimming it into a wedge shape, ensuring it has 2–3 buds. Insert the scion into the cleft so that the cambium layers of both parts align. Secure the graft with grafting tape or a clip, and keep the plant in a warm, humid environment with indirect light. After a few weeks, once the graft union has healed and new growth appears, gradually remove the wrapping and allow the plant to grow normally.
