We are launching a special series on Artificial Intelligence.
To premiere this series, we spoke with tech ethicist Tristan Harris—co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology. In this conversation, we explore his warnings about the impending age of AI. According to Harris, the current trajectory isn’t just menacing the economy, but fundamentally rewiring human relationships, altering parenting and mental health, potentially accelerating climate collapse, and even threatening the very fabric of society. We inquire into ways to remain human in an era where machines can simulate empathy, displace our labor, and potentially outmaneuver us.
Some of the questions we plan to explored together:
- As AI dissolves the boundary between authentic and synthetic, does it lead us into a “post-truth” era where discernment is challenged in completely new ways?
- What are the pitfalls of “synthetic romance” through algorithmic compassion? Does it reduce our human capacity for love? What is “AI psychosis”?
- What are the risks of outsourcing our inner journeys to AI? Does bypassing the struggle of human cognition in learning, creating, or contemplation stunt our spiritual evolution? What does Harris call “Colonization of Consciousness?”
- Are current technology platforms designed to feed ego-identification, social comparison, and polarization? Do they amplify the “Separate Self”, working directly against spiritual realizations of interdependence and oneness?
- Does the increasing use of AI in warfare lead us to a dystopian future?
When AI systems can model a child’s psychological triggers more accurately than the child’s own parents—and operate without meaningful regulation or transparency—what are we actually consenting to when we let our children use AI?
- Can our ability to make sense of our world keep up with the rising interconnected complexity of our problems? If not, what does this “wisdom gap” lead us to?
Other guest speakers in the series include: Karen Hao, Baratunde Thurston, Christian “Zacatecho” Ortiz, Lyla June Johnston, Bayo Akomolafe, Vanessa Machado de Oliveira and Alnoor Ladha.
Called “the closest thing Silicon Valley has to a conscience” by the Atlantic, Tristan Harris is a technology ethicist and co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology, a nonprofit dedicated to aligning technology with humanity’s best interest. Tristan gained international recognition when he was featured in the Emmy-winning Netflix documentary, The Social Dilemma. Since raising the alarm on the harms of social media, Tristan has emerged as a leading public educator on the harms of unregulated artificial intelligence. Named to the TIME100 AI list in 2023, Tristan is “a tech leader committed to ensuring that we get this generation of AI right, because we simply can’t afford to get it wrong.”
Science and Nonduality (SAND) contemplates and reveres the beauty, complexity, pain, and great mystery that weave the infinite cycles of existence. We explore beyond ultimate truths, binary thinking, and individual awakening while acknowledging humanity as a mere part of the intricate web of life.
