In one of the most elemental moments of the film, Kolin Sutherland-Wilson—Indigenous activist, father, and aspiring storyteller from the village of Anspayaxw—speaks about what it truly means to belong to a land. Born into the Fireweed Clan of the Gitxsan Nation and the son of Hereditary Chief Art Wilson, Kolin shares that his people are not simply from their territory—they are shapes of it. He explains that everything in them—bone, breath, story, instinct—has been formed by the land itself. The ridgelines, the river’s curve, the way cedar leans into the wind; all of it lives inside their bodies. Their identities are not abstractions but expressions of geography, ecology, and cosmology. To harm the land, he says, is to harm the people. To displace the people is to fracture the land’s own memory. In a world where colonial powers attempt to redraw boundaries and claim jurisdiction, Kolin’s teaching lands with unmistakable clarity: the land is not a backdrop to Indigenous life. It is the ancestor, the shaper, the first law. His people carry the contours of their territory within them—proof of a relationship that cannot be severed by borders, industry, or occupation. His voice offers a cosmology of belonging that is both intimate and political: to know who you are, you must remember what shaped you. And what shaped you is the land. ✨ Thank you to everyone who joined us for the 5-day gathering.
