III.
“Clouds of Soaring Egrets”
Composer: Zhao Jun-Yi
Conductor: An Jing-Ye
Program: At Both Ends of the Time Tunnel VIII — Nanyang Vibrancy
Date: August 31, 2025
Venue: Chiayi County Performing Arts Center, Concert Hall
Commissioned by the Chiayi Traditional Orchestra (CTO), this work premiered at the 2025 Chiayi Ethno-Music Festival. The piece is inspired by the annual autumn migration of the Cattle Egret (Bubulcus coromandus) through the Taixing Valley in Chiayi, Taiwan. While the composer did not witness the event in person, the inspiration blossomed from documentaries and visual archives—a fluid, tide-like movement of life that evolved in his mind into an Impressionistic musical scroll.
Rather than a literal depiction of a timeline, the composition constructs an experience of "watching" and "sensing." It is both an imaginative projection of nature and an internal resonance of the soul.
I. Introduction: The Morning Mist Dissipates
The opening unfolds with fragmented melodies and multilayered textures, mimicking the silhouettes of a valley in the dawn light—hazy yet vibrant. A "tongue-twister" melodic motif weaves through with shifting repetitions, creating subtle tension between ambiguity and flow.
II. Theme Development: Realm of White Feathers
Instead of a single melody, this section is built on alternating melodic fragments linked by motivic materials. They surface across different instrumental colors, creating a layered, structural sense of movement.
III. Middle Section: Distant Song Emerges
Amidst the misty background, the melodic imagery of the Taiwan folk song "A Little Bird" quietly surfaces. Departing from the original’s brisk pace, this section adopts a distant, mountain-song-like tone, sketching a projection of nostalgia or unspoken emotion.
IV. Adagio: Gaze and Reflection
A thread from the previous melody reappears in a broader, more solemn form. The music reveals an introspective and profound depth, akin to the contemplation and longing stirred by a vast, breathtaking landscape.
V. Recapitulation: Soaring Through Clouds
The music shifts from stillness to motion as previous themes reassemble and build toward a climax. Layered sounds evoke the sight of thousands of Cattle Egrets taking flight like surging waves—a grand and breathtaking sonic spectacle.
VI. Coda: Lingering Echoes and Distant Shadows
The finale returns to tranquility as the flock recedes and the music fades. The "A Little Bird" motif reappears, this time presented through soft human chanting, leaving a resonance that is both an echo of nature and a voice from the heart.
Blending Impressionistic techniques with folk melodic thinking, this work is neither a documentary nor a realistic depiction, but a landscape of the heart woven through music.
